Packaged industrial liquids and materials require complete information before a transporter can assess the movement. Saying ‘ten drums’ is not enough: the material identity, classification, packaging type, gross weight, closures, labels, documents, loading method and route can all change what is operationally and legally appropriate. This checklist helps consignors prepare an enquiry; it does not replace applicable law, manufacturer instructions, safety advice or carrier acceptance.
1. Identify the material accurately
Use the exact product or material name shown on the commercial and safety documents. Tell the transporter whether the shipment is regulated, hazardous, temperature-sensitive, high-value, corrosive, flammable or otherwise subject to special conditions. Never rely on a broad label such as ‘chemical’ when a specific classification is required.

2. Describe every package
State whether the consignment uses steel drums, plastic drums, carboys, jerry cans, IBCs, cartons or another packaging system. Include package capacity, filled weight, total package count, dimensions and whether the packages are palletised. Photographs can help an operations team understand the proposed handling condition, but they do not replace inspection or documentation.

3. Check closures, condition and containment
Packages should be compatible with their contents, correctly closed, free from visible damage or leakage and prepared according to applicable rules and the packaging manufacturer's instructions. Do not offer bulging, corroded, wet, poorly sealed or unlabelled containers for routine collection. Secondary containment, absorbent material or overpack requirements should be determined by qualified personnel for the actual product.

4. Plan forklift and manual handling
Tell the transporter how the packages will be loaded and unloaded. Palletised drums or carboys may require a suitable forklift, trained operator, sound pallets and adequate dock or ground conditions. Loose packages need a handling plan that accounts for weight, shape and risk. Never assume a driver or vehicle carries every handling device.

5. Match documents to the shipment
Commercial and transport documents should describe the physical consignment consistently. Depending on the material and movement, the shipper may need invoices, e-way bill information, SDS, declarations, permits or emergency information. The consignor remains responsible for accurate declaration and legally compliant packaging and documentation.
